Derby Moor Business Breakfast

On Friday 6th September 2019 we welcomed over forty visitors to the school from the business and education community. Our guests joined all the Derby Moor Academy staff over an informal breakfast to discuss ideas of how we can best support our students with their future career aspirations. Following the breakfast, Rachel Quinn from D2N2 presented a fascinating insight into local labour market information. Rachel explained:

‘’The mix and profile of jobs is changing faster than ever – we need to understand this change and find ways to plan more effectively for it”.

Martin Care our Enterprise Adviser from Bombardier then shared some of his experience and offered some advice as to how we can work together to encourage and inspire all of our students to prepare for the exciting and ever changing world of work.

We were delighted to have such positive feedback from our visitors. Joe Carruthers, Business Development Manager from CT Skills, Nottinghamshire said:

“What an outstanding meeting this morning at Derby Moor Academy. Derby Moor is committed to meet all aspects of the Gatsby Benchmarks for outstanding careers provision and to address all requirements of the Careers Strategy from the Department of Education.

Now in the third year of a five year strategy whereby they believe that every pupil should have multiple opportunities to learn from employers about work, employment and the skills that are valued in the workplace. This can be through a range of enrichment activities including visiting speakers, mentoring and enterprise schemes.

How inspiring to be in a room full of Local Employers, colleges, Training providers, Universities, Think tank groups, D2N2 and specialist Enterprise Mentors assigned to the school.

A great opportunity to come together to support our youngsters in understanding the changing labour market and how this affects future skill requirements.  A breath of fresh air to be in a room of people who are so committed to ensuring the success of our local young people and economy by working together.”

At Derby Moor Academy we already work closely with many local businesses both large and small. In addition, we run a range of activities with local colleges and universities all of which help to place our students in a favourable position when they are ready to apply for future courses and employment.

We are always open to new ideas and offers of help from our school community. If you would like to find out more about our careers provision at Derby Moor Academy or would like to get involved, please contact Andrew Kilgour (Careers Leader) at
