Derby Moor Debating Society
Our Debating Society was in action again last week at the Derby Law School as part of an inter-schools competition organised by Derby University. Our second team of Yamika Phiri Year 7, Anisa Archer Year 10, Alicja Rozwadowska Year 8 and Callum Yates Year 9 were narrowly beaten by an all Year 10 team from West Park debating “This house believes that the UK should liberalise its drugs policy.” We are extremely grateful to Alicja and Callum for stepping in at the last minute to replace two students who were unable to compete. The judges told us that all performances appeared well rehearsed and speeches were cleverly constructed.
Two weeks ago our First Team won the debate against Chellaston arguing against the motion that This House believes that Humanity should fear developments in Artificial Intelligence. The team consisting of Adna Bjelobrvic, Emily Helliwell, Roseanna Rashid and Burt Cundy were praised for their powerful arguments.
We’re looking forward to competing against Littleover this week debating whether or not we should have an open border policy for immigrants and Allestree Woodlands on 14th February on the issue of whether Tourism Benefits the World.
The judges told the students how useful their public speaking skills will be when seeking future employment as their skill with words will help them to stand out.
